Webinar: Creating the Ideal Trading State

In the final part of the 3 part webinar series for Disnat Direct and clients, I discuss the importance of not just trade management but self-management. Summary: Anyone who has been trading for any length of time quickly realizes how important the mental game is to trading. After all, trading is largely a game of decision making and as human beings, there is a host of cognitive biases and mental leaks (fears, limiting beliefs, etc.) that can bleed into one’s trading. Many traders mistakenly believe that consistent trading success is simply a function of having a battle-tested trading system that […]

Missing the forest through the trees

I was recently coaching a trader who had been trading for several years and had found some success with trading however his results had rather been inconsistent. In our conversations he expressed growing frustration that he was missing a lot of winning trades due his inability to spot profitable setups in real-time even though he was spending hours studying charts and setups and felt as though he ought to be able to spot his go to setups. At the end of the day he was at his wits end and felt as though his progress as a trader had stalled out.   […]

Why trying hard is not enough

Many of us have been mistakenly taught in our childhood (and then reinforced in school) that our successes and failures depend on our efforts.   In fact our society puts a premium on this “culture of doing” – the “Just Do It” culture – and idolizes the doers / Type A’s of the world. Unfortunately in trading this emphasis on “just doing” rarely works. Don’t get me wrong there is a place for determination and effort however often times in our rush for results we skip the lessons and try to go straight for the outcomes. So what’s wrong with […]

Episode 29 – Exploring The World Of Smart Drugs With Mansal Denton

Summary In this week’s episode we are going to be exploring a rather esoteric topic in the domain of performance enhancement and that is the world of smart drugs. Now if you’ve seen the movie Limitless then you probably know what i’m talking about.   But if this is your first time hearing or learning about this topic then I think this will serve as a very good introduction and primer to smart drugs. The big takeaway I’d like you to walk with away from our conversation is that there are no quick fixes or biological shortcuts. In this episode […]

Are Large Losses Necessary?

Recently I was having a friendly debate with a fellow trader around the nature of losses.  His belief, and one which i believe is shared by a great many traders, is that experiencing a large trading loss (or even losses) is a necessary part of learning how to trade.  That is for a trader to truly learn the hard lessons in trading there has to be a loss so painful that he will not forget the lesson. We debated the merits around this argument and in the end it’s my opinion that large trading losses are not necessary however for […]

Episode 21 – Finding The Currency Of Performance

We’ve all heard the saying that “time is our most precious resource”. Although time is sacred, I’m of the opinion that our most valuable resource is energy – not time. You see in our modern era we constantly borrow from Peter to pay Paul, and it’s a poor trade. We deplete ourselves of our physical energy by burning the candle at both ends and by neglecting to properly feed and care for our bodies.    This persists week after week, year after year until we squander our biological inheritance and rely on modern medicine to cover the symptoms. We spend all of our time […]
